Three questions: which size is yours?

Most guides hedge. We do not. Answer three questions and we will commit to a recommendation, with the inch math behind it.

Why most guides hedge

Most pages ranking for "California King vs King" are written by mattress retailers, mattress manufacturers, or affiliate sites paid per click. They have a commercial incentive to recommend both sizes: more readers, more clicks, more conversions either way. The honest answer is sharper.

By body type plus household, one size is usually genuinely better. A 6'4" sleeper has 4 inches of clearance on Standard King (covers untuck, feet hit footboards) versus 8 inches on Cal King. A couple with two adults and a 35-pound dog has 30 inches of width per adult on Cal King versus 32 inches on Standard. These are not rounding differences. They predict whether you will sleep well.

This site does not sell mattresses, accept paid placement, or carry affiliate links. We commit to recommendations and footnote every dimension to ISPA[1] or ASTM F1566-18[2].

Before you buy: the sheet trap

California King fitted sheets and Standard King fitted sheets are NOT interchangeable. Cal King sheets are 72 by 84 inches. Standard King sheets are 76 by 80 inches. Putting one on the other creates a 4-inch overhang mismatch: corners untuck at the head, sides bag loose, foot runs short.

Frequently asked questions

Is a California King bigger than a regular King?
Total surface area is almost identical: California King is 6,048 square inches (72 by 84) and Standard King is 6,080 square inches (76 by 80) under the ISPA mattress size schedule. Cal King is longer but narrower. The shape changes your sleep, not the overall footprint.
Who should sleep in a California King?
Sleepers 6 feet 2 inches or taller, single sleepers in long-narrow bedrooms, and households where length matters more than shared width. The 84-inch length gives a 6'4" person 8 inches of clearance instead of 4. Couples without a tall partner usually prefer Standard King.
Can you put King sheets on a California King?
No. A Standard King fitted sheet is 76 by 80 inches; a California King mattress is 72 by 84. The result is a 4-inch short foot and 4-inch loose sides. Buy sheets explicitly labelled California King for a Cal King mattress.
Do you pay more for a California King mattress?
Usually no, at the same tier. Most major manufacturers price Cal King and Standard King identically. A minority charge a $50 to $200 premium for Cal King in the premium tier. Where Cal King meaningfully costs more is in bedding and accessories: typically 10 to 20 percent higher due to lower production volume.
What is the minimum room size for a California King?
A 12 by 12 foot room accommodates either size with about 36 inches of walkway on each side. A narrow 11 by 14 foot room actually suits Cal King better, because the 4 extra inches of length use the long dimension and the 4 fewer inches of width preserves walkway clearance.
Is California King better for couples?
Usually no. Standard King gives each adult 38 inches of width versus Cal King's 36 inches. 38 inches is approximately the width of a Twin XL mattress (ISPA spec: 38 by 80). 36 inches is approximately the width of a US military cot. The exception is couples where at least one partner is 6'2" or taller and length matters more than shared width.
What is the difference between Split King and Split Cal King?
Split King is two separate Twin XL mattresses (38 by 80 each, total 76 by 80, equivalent to Standard King). Split Cal King is two separate XL Twin mattresses (36 by 84 each, total 72 by 84, equivalent to California King). Twin XL is an ISPA-standard size; XL Twin is a manufacturer-specific split size. Twin XL has wider availability, lower cost, and broader adjustable-base support.
Will a King mattress fit up my stairs?
It is often tight. The IRC residential building code (R311.7.1) sets the minimum residential stair width at 36 inches. Both King mattresses are 72 to 76 inches wide. At a 45-degree rotation the effective carry width is approximately 50 inches. Foam mattresses ship compressed in boxes that fit any standard 32-inch interior door (IRC R311.2). Pocketed-coil innersprings cannot bend and may need a split foundation or alternative route.
